Completed in 2004, the Milton M. Ratner Performing Arts Theater is so named in appreciation for the support of the Milton M. Ratner Foundation.
In the tradition of a directors' laboratory theater, the theater is a flexible contemporary performance space. Seating and sound and lighting equipment are not attached, so they can be refigured for a variety of uses. Productions can be done "in the round", or the theater can be arranged in the traditional manner for recitals, plays, concerts and lectures. A seating capacity of 200 gives the theater a feeling of intimacy that will enhance performances and productions.
With the use of roll up doors, the performance area can "spill over" onto the parking lot, allowing for outdoor shows and exhibits. Included in the theater are dressing rooms, a green room, an art gallery expansion, an elevator, an office, a conference room, and rest rooms.
The versatility and practicality of this performance space is consistent with the Calhoun Gordon Arts Council's mission to make the arts accessible to all.
This space is also available as a rental facility for weddings, parties, and other functions.
Thanks to over 300 individuals, groups, businesses, corporations, and foundations that have contributed approximately $2,000,000 to this ambitious project, we are able to create a community arts center and theater in downtown Calhoun for the people of Calhoun and Gordon County.
There is still an opportunity for people to be involved in the capital campaign on an affordable level. All donations, large and small, are welcome.
"Name That Chair" is a permanent recognition of your donation. The "Name That Chair" campaign was launched on September 22, 2003 when a group of Ratner Theater supporters came together at The Harris Arts Center to begin making chair naming privileges available to the public. The funds raised in this campaign have been used to purchase chairs, sound and lighting systems, and other furnishings and equipment needed for the theater. A few chairs are still available so individuals, or groups who wish to have their names engraved on a chair may call The Harris Arts Center at 706-629-2599 for details.
