Home School Class: Multimedia Arts

The Harris Arts Center offers collaborative learning opportunities for families who home school. HAC will work strategically with individual home school associations to develop specific classes (music, dance, visual arts, etc.) to meet their needs.  We can create classes for as few as five students during most any time of the day. We are currently offering multimedia art classes for our home school students.

Take a guided tour of the Landscape Exhibit in the main gallery of the Harris Arts Center and learn the basics of color, composition and style of the landscape artist. Then join one of our professional artists and teachers for a lesson in landscape painting. From mountains and meadows to parks or your own backyard—beautiful landscapes are everywhere—if you know how to “look!” Each child will go home with her own masterpiece and a new appreciation and understanding of the landscape.

The follow-up Scavenger Hunt reinforces the newly introduced concepts. Internationally known voice coach Sandra Manley then introduces your troupe to African-American Spirituals with a sing-along. Finish off the day by making a musical instrument with the HAC children’s art teacher.

We are offering two dates for Art Camp, a Theater Camp and a Garage Band Camp this year. Detailed information below. Art Camps are $55 for Harris Arts Center Members and $70 for nonmembers plus a $20 supply fee. Theater Camp is $60 for Harris Arts Center members and $75 for nonmembers. Garage Band Camp is $150 per band member.

Garage Band Camp: All ages, but must be in a band. June 23–July 3. 10:30 a.m.–2:00 p.m. How to build a better band from musicianship, to light and sound, to putting together a press kit, to stage presence and more. Performance open to the public Thurs. July 3 / 7 PM

Art Instructor-Johnnie Dobson
Johnnie Dobson earned his Bachelor of Science in Art Education from the University of Georgia in 1978. For 9 years, he taught two-dimensional and three-dimensional art and art history at Calhoun High School. He and his wife, Penny, are exhibitors at numerous art shows in the southeast.
Johnnie teaches pottery using free form building of clay and the preteen/teen art class

Art Instructor-Diana Forster 
HAC's former programming coordinator, Diana Forster is a professional artist who shows and sells her pottery throughout the southeast. Diana holds a BS from Clemson University; post-graduate studies include Georgia State University and Scott Cole Salons. She is an elder at First Presbyterian Church of Calhoun, board member and volunteer at King Preschool, and a member of the HAC's Visual Arts Committee.
Diana teaches children's art classes and workshops.

Art Instructor-Penny Dobson
Penny Dobson is a native of Calhoun, Ga., educated at Kennesaw University. She teaches art at Gordon Central High School. She and Johnnie travel throughout the North and Southeast participating in art shows such as "The Atlanta Dogwood Festival", Finister Fest", and "Praters Mill".  She has donated some of her work to be on display at The Harris Arts Center.

Art Instructor-Toni Krause

Toni Krause is from Kennesaw, GA. Toni is a former early childhood teacher, attended the Art Instruction School and has attended workshops with well-known artists-instuectors such as John DeLavega.  Toni is a member of the Atlanta Portrait Society, the Atlanta Arts Center, a friend of Shane McDonald Studios, and has her own studio at the Artisan Resource Center Marietta. Her work has been shown in and won awards in galleries and group shows, and has had her portrait work featured in and on the cover of magazines.

Art Instructor - Marcie Childress

Marcie studied art in Barnesville, Georgia at Gordon College. She has painted with many well known artist such as Mary Carol of California, Robert Warren of Ohio, Dorothy Dent of Missouri, and more. Marcie taught art at Calhoun Elementary for 3 years and has been teaching from her home studio since 2002. Photography Instructor- Jackie Seger
Jackie Seger has been the photographer at the Calhoun Times for six (6) years. She has won numerous awards and is a lifetime member of the International Society of Photographers. Ms. Seger's work hangs in businesses, galleries, and homes throughout the U.S.
Jackie teaches 35mm and  digital photography for all ages.

Dance Instructor- Bob Parker
Bob Parker was trained and became an instructor for Arthur Murray Dance Studio in Sacramento, Ca. He has taught at his own studio for 20 years ( Parker Dance Studio). He is considered the "Dean of Ballroom Dancing" in the Chattanooga- Dalton area.

Creative Writing Instructor- Tony Burton
Tony Burton is an author, editor and publisher with experience both in the non-fiction and fiction arenas.  He has published over 140 stories, articles and columns in a variety of venues, including The Calhoun Times newspaper, Crime and Suspense, ThugLit and Reflection’s Edge ezines, Focus On Your Child, and Great Mystery and Suspense magazine.  He has also contributed stories to three anthologies, edited two anthologies, and written two cozy mystery novels.  As a part of his small-press publishing business, Tony compiles and edits stories for anthologies, edits novels and non-fiction books, and designs book covers.  Tony’s books are available locally at The Lighthouse Christian Book Store, at Wall Street Trading Company, the Gift Shop in Gordon Hospital and at the Gordon County Historical Society at Oakleigh.

 Piano Instructor-Erika Kanno
Erika began her musical studies at the age of six in Kobe, Japan with her mother, then with Fusako Kanal. She continued her studies at the age of seven in Rome, GA with Mary Ann Kinght at Shorter College and later with Wiliam Knight. Erika has entered and won numerous competitions and awards.  She has served as a church pianist/choir accompaniest at the Calhoun First Presbyterian Church since 2004.

Guitar Instructor- Nathan Sexton
Nathan learned to appreciate music at a young age from his father, Russell Sexton, a well-known local musician and, at age 13, took guitar lessons from another local musician, John Harris. Nathan also took lessons at Pete’s Music City from accomplished guitarist, the late Randy Stennant. In junior high and high school, Nathan played clarinet and tuba in the band. He majored in marketing at Coosa Valley College in Rome, but never lost touch with his musical roots.  Nathan recently opened a music studio at 204 Piedmont Street in Downtown Calhoun.

Kindermusic Instructor-Tammaney Holcombe
Tammaney Holcombe is a veteran licensed Kindermusik Instructor of over seven years. She received her Bachelor's degree in Music Education at Berry College. She  taught in the Floyd County Schools for 18 years, and music and art at Unity Christian School in Rome, Ga. Currently she is the owner and director of the P.L.A.Y. House  (Preschool and Kindermusik with Miss Tammaney.)

Voice Teacher--Sandra Manley
Sandra Manley, international singer/songwriter will be teaching Vocal Coaching classes at the Harris ARTS Center starting April 7th.  She will be working with those that have intentions for a singing career and those that simply want to be a better singer for their choir.  An important part of Ms Manley's skills is being able to take a beginner with no training all the way to stage. Get into these comprehensive classes that will be sure to validate and challenge your vocal study.

Mandolin Instructor--Rebecca Lovell
Many will recognize Rebecca Lovell as a member of the Lovell Sisters, a group that plays an innovative fusion of country, folk and contemporary acoustic music.  The Lovells have performed from their hometown of Calhoun, throughout the United States and Europe. Rebecca began taking classical piano and violin at age five, but strayed from the classical fold to play mandolin.  In 2006, Rebecca became the first woman and youngest contestant to win the MerleFest International Mandolin
Competition. Rebecca writes much of the original material performed by the band and finds it helpful to play mandola, guitar, banjo and piano while composing.

Resophonic Guitar Instructor--Megan Lovell
Many will recognize Megan Lovell as a member of the Lovell Sisters, a group that plays an innovative fusion of country, folk and contemporary acoustic music. The Lovells have performed from their hometown of Calhoun, throughout the United States and Europe. Megan studied classical piano and violin for 10 years, but after hearing Jerry Douglas (of Alison Krauss and Union Station,) chose to pursue a passionate interest in the Dobro.  Besides Jerry Douglas, Megan's primary influences are electric guitarists, such as Mark Knopfler, the Allman Brothers, Eric Clapton and Derek Trucks.


Banjo Instructor--Steve Dyrda
Steve has been a lover of the 5-string banjo for decades and continues to develop his own style of playing after departing from classical guitar during his years at Southern Illinois University in 1983.  Steve has studied under veteran player Greg Cahill of Special Consensus and is a former student at the renowned Old Town School of Folk Music in Chicago, IL.  Strongly influenced by the music of Jerry Garcia and Béla Fleck, he continues to explore the banjo with an ear towards the progressive side.  Steve currently is a member of the local bluegrass gospel group Higher Calling.

Violin--Alexandra Jones
Alex is a professional violinist with 13 years of experience, is a member of the Berry College Orchestra and the Oak Hill Symphony, and has trained under such respected teachers as Mark Wood—an electric violinist on tour with Celine Dion—and Tammy Rogers-King—Reba McEntire’s violinist. She has attended Atlanta Suzuki Violin Institute, Blair School of Music International Fiddle School at Vanderbilt and more. While teaching at the arts center, Jones will concentrate on the Suzuki method, instruction that includes training on background, philosophy, technique and repertoire.

Woodwinds: Saxophone, Clarinet, Flute--Tim Crump

Tim Crump is a versatile saxophonist, multi-instrumentalist, and composer. After graduating high school, he attended Georgia State University in Atlanta as a jazz studies major.  He has studied with many of the Atlanta and Chattanooga areas finest teachers. His saxophone teachers have included Alan Wyatt, Mace Hibbard, Brian Lopes,  and E.J. Hughes. He's studied flute with John Carruth and Sarah Ambrose.  His passion for music has led him to share the stage in formal and informal situations with David Sanchez, Slide Hampton, Mike Dillon (of Les Claypol and the Flying Frog Brigade), Duane Trucks, Jazzmatic, and the Newberry Jam among many others. Tim's influences range from John Coltrane to Radiohead to Stravinsky. After three years in Atlanta, Tim decided it was time for a change of pace. He currently lives in Calhoun while finishing his degree in Saxophone Performance at Lee University. He teaches and performs and teaches throughout the Atlanta, North Georgia, and Tennessee Valley areas.
